Pterygium

Pterygium

A pterygium (sometimes called surfers eye) is a triangular fleshy white growth that grows onto your cornea (the clear window over the colored part of your eye). Sometimes this growth can be small and sometimes it can be large. The larger pterygiums can sometimes block your vision when it has grown over your pupil. Larger pterygiums can sometimes change your eye glass prescription and cause astigmatism.

Scientist believe that one the factors that cause pterygium to grow is UV light. People that live in sunny climates and work outdoors tend to be most at risk of developing these growths.

Symptoms of Pterygium:

  • Some people have no symptoms
  • Redness over the area
  • Foreign body sensation
  • Itching
  • Burning
  • Blurry vision
