Glaucoma is the leading cause of blindness in people over 60 years old. Many people have no symptoms in early glaucoma. As the disease progresses, people slowly lose their sight. There are many types of glaucoma, the most common are:
- Open Angle – most common type; typically the eye pressure is high
- Normal Tension – with this type of glaucoma, the eye pressure is normal; however, a person still loses their vision.Exact cause of this glaucoma is still unknown and may be related to blood flow to the eye.
- Angle Closure – this type of glaucoma is when the drain pipes of the eye are narrow and the eye pressure rises quickly. This type is typically painful.
Symptoms of an angle closure glaucoma attack include:
- Sudden blurry vision
- Nausea and vomiting
- Halos around light
- Severe eye pain
