Fuchs Dystrophy

Fuchs Dystrophy

Fuchs Dystrophy is a genetic condition of the cornea (the clear covering over the colored part of the eye). In Fuchs, the back layer of cornea cells decrease in number over time. The cells that are left tend not to function as well also. These cells are responsible for pumping fluid out of the cornea. When these cells are affected by the disease, the cornea tends to build up fluid and get swollen. This can cause decreased and blurry vision.

Symptoms of Fuchs Dystrophy

  • Blurred vision
  • Halos and glare around lights
  • Decreased visual acuity on the eye chart
  • Fluctuating vision during the day
  • Pain and foreign body sensation
  • Reduced contrast sensitivity

Fuchs is more common in women in their 50s and 60s, but can happen earlier in adulthood in both women and men.

The diagnosis of Fuchs can made by an eye exam with a slit lamp. (in office microscope that an ophthalmologist uses to do eye exams.)

If you have a family history of Fuchs, it is good idea to get screened for this since it can be inherited 50% of the time.
